Before you start building links, you'll have to ask your self "Why would someone link to our site?". If you have trouble answering this question, you'll probably be better off building remarkable, link worthy content first.

Dropping blog comments just for links is not cool. Although services that search for so called "dofollow blogs" seem to be pretty popular, I wouldn't advise dropping "Great info. Thanks!" comments on several blogs just for the links. If you leave something valuable in stead, your not only building links, but a solid brand as well.

Don't forget your own website as a link building tool. Lots of webmasters tend to go out obtaining new links when they start their link building campaign. However, in lots of cases, it is much wiser to look at your own website first. Optimizing your internal link structure can lead to impressive improvements in search engine rankings.

Paid links can be bad, but bad paid links are even worse. Almost every webmaster knows that buying links in order to improve rankings is against Google's guidelines. If you obey this rule or not (and risk the consequences) is totally up to you, but keep in mind that being mentioned between poker and porn can harm more than just rankings.

Use your network wisely. It's much easier to get links from people you know for obvious reasons. This is why asking friends, relatives or other familiar folks that happen to own a (relevant) website to link to you can really pay off. Don't ask everyone you know to link to every website you own, though ;)
