I can easily provide you a list with semi-non profit portals that offered me "services" against bizarre prices. I would almost like to build my own "startpagina". And don't even mentioning that corrupt DMOZ.... argh! :P Sure you mention some great articles, especially some nice directories bring in some nice linkvalue but the big networks here in The Netherlands (as you might know) are not that easy to get in without paying.
