Unlike previous years, I did not have as much time for blogging in 2010 as I had hoped I would have. Although I did publish a few articles that I think deserve a mention, you can find the best link building articles of the year on other blogs.

These articles are my personal favorites of 2010:

1. Link Building with the Experts – 2010 Edition

Rae Hoffman-Dolan, Outspoken Media

What’s better than getting advice from 11 link building experts at the same time? It simply is not possible to read this article and not get new ideas for your link building campaign.

2. Building Deep Links Into E-Commerce Product Pages

Everett Sizemore, SEOmoz

Building links to ecommerce pages can be one of the hardest things to do. Sure, anyone can build links to home pages or link bait content, but what about pages that scream “BUY ME!”?

3. 62 steps to the definitive link building campaign

Mark Nunney, Wordtracker

Most of the tips in Mark’s article will probably not sound new to most link builders, but it’s the thoroughness of the article and the clear process that made it stand out for me in 2010.

And these articles also deserve another read:

The conference season has officially started. People are talking about SEO, SMM and more marketing abbreviations in nearly any medium to large-sized city in the world, which means that these people probably have less time to blog this month. I didn’t come across a whole lot of excellent articles (maybe I was too busy enjoying my vacation), but this article with hands-on link building tips stood out for me. Great, actionable advice that nearly anyone can use!

When I was at ProSEO in London last week, three things seemed to come back in any link building session: create a natural and brand-rich link landscape, find out why people link out or share stuff, and building relationships remains important. Russel Smith‘s explanation of the BBC’s approach to infographics and their new linking guidelines was just one of the small extras that made the event even more worthwhile.

SEO seems to have a questionable reputation, unfortunately, which is comparable to the reputation of car salesmen and lawyers. I’m sure that, like in any other industry, over 80% of the people working in it has the best intentions, but it’s tactics like this and threads like this that give both the 80% and the other 20% a bad name. That’s just how things work, and “92 reasons why SEOs are God’s gift to humanity”-type posts usually only make it worse. You are now a car salesman, deal with it.

Now on to today’s main concern for many of these SEOs: getting links (legitimately). One way to get links is via PR. And although many news websites and journalists don’t link out very often, there are still lots of ways to get links from newspapers. Just make sure that your pitch is ok, that you’re pitching the right person in the right way, and you’ll double your chances of success. Keep in mind, though, that influence != popularity.

We’re only halfway during the summer, but I think that this years winner of the SEMMYs is already decided. Rae Hoffman collected the thoughts of 11 great link builders (just like she did two years ago) and compiled something that I would call link building awesomeness. That’s about 100 years of link building experience in one article, so you’d better read it, bookmark it, print it and read it again.

The reason why group interview articles are so great to read, is because they are usually packed with real life examples (not guesses or assumptions), case studies, tips from the field and some form of link building discussion. Any link building strategy tips, advice on how to do research, or content marketing guidance you get from such an article has already been tested an tuned, so you can use it straight away.

“Link building is becoming more difficult lately. People don’t link out anymore and Twitter is polluting the link graph. Oh, and Google isn’t treating my links they way they should.” This seems to be the consensus on various blogs, forums and even Twitter, but I can’t say I agree with it.

Actually, I even think that link building has become more easy, and especially a lot more fun during the past few years. Sure, it can be different to build links to certain types of websites, and some industries are more polluted with bad links than the Gulf of Mexico currently is with oil, but this just asks for more creativity.

Thinking outside the box, evaluating success from the past, building relationships, or even thinking a bit past the usual tactics while avoiding the most common pitfalls can bring you quite far. In other words: there’s no such thing as advanced link building – it’s simply a mix between creativity, logical thinking and persistence (sometimes with a little bit of help).
